The average American car drives 30 miles per day.

Let’s take on a particular model of Tesla – Model 3 (not the most energy efficient EV but not bad)

Tesla Model 3 uses 250 Wh per mile.

So a round trip of 80 miles uses 20 kWh.

Let’s (probably falsely) assume the cars never charge whilst out say at work.

The chargers would be say 32 Amp  and yes this is available for such a home. If not they will be smaller as the chargers are configurable for the available current.

One charger per vehicle and say 4 vehicles.

The chargers communicate and will stagger their charges to avoid overload.

Batteries will store at least 70 kWh and that make each car to store more than 3 days of charging.

The cars will charge as needed.

Assuming all 4 cars are going 80 miles per day by car and only charging from home then there would be sufficient capacity.

Since this is NOT what the average household does with their cars as such there isn’t any problem.

And the cars will be able to feed power to the grid when supply is short. Therefore, it is expected the cars will reduce the issues with peak power demand.

Using just the 110v supply (standard plug outler) you already have – you can recharge about 60 miles in 10 hours – and that is alright but NOT ideal.

You want faster? Well… A “supercharger” costs about $15,000 to install.

How about pretty fast and not crazy expensive?

Using a level 2 charging station with a 220v/30A supply (same as you use for a washer/dryer) you can recharge 60 miles in 2-3 hours  or 200-250 miles overnight.

Using a 220v/50A supply will usually cost under $1500 (in most standard cases)  which surely is the best option for most home installations since you can recharge 60 miles in two hours or completely recharge any electric car that Tesla makes completely from 0% to 100% overnight.

In the US, that would be a level 2 charger with a 240V service to the plug with a 40A circuit breaker. This can yield 30 hours of range per hour of charging. Don’t go with a standard 120V line, as you’ll only be able to recover about 3-4 miles of range per hour of charging (at best).

Your best bet is to hire a licensed pro. The cost for that will vary mainly based on how far the installation is from the service panel in your home. The cost is usually under $1,500. However, that’s a one-time charge. If you’re considering purchasing an EV, it’s a worthwhile investment.
